[The Development of Japanese Modern Photography in MANCHOUKUO]『 異郷のモダニズム-満洲写真全史-』

By the Portsmouth Treaty of 1905 (Meiji 38), Japan acquired mining rights for the southern branch line of the Tosei Railway and coal mines, and in 1906 (Meiji 39) the following year, <South Manchurian Railway Co., Ltd. (Mantetsu)> It was established and embarked on full-fledged colonial management. Photographs of "Manchuria" showed a unique development as a means of "propaganda" to inform the people of the "mainland" about the continent. From representations that showed the peoples and customs of the continent in a "encyclopedia" style, to iconography full of romanticism accompanied by longing for the West, and in the latter half of the 1930s, as the age of graphism entered, the representations of the continent changed. It has transformed into a sophisticated "symbol". The photographic expression of "Manchuria" developed over a quarter of a century will be traced through precious vintage prints and numerous materials from the time, and we will once again introduce the fertile expression that Japanese modernism was able to achieve.

日本の近代画家、写真家たちがアジアをどのようにとらえてきたかを明治期から現代まで跡づける「近代の東アジアイメージ」展が10日から12月27日まで豊田市美術館で開催された。
第1章「明治期段階－文人画・歴史画から現実へ」、
第2章「エキゾチシズムの諸相」、第3章「アジアの女性像」、
第4章「東アジアで開花した「日本美術」」、
第5章「カメラアイを通して」、
第6章「場末への眼差し」、
第7章「内的荒野・大地からの幻影」、
第8章「現代にて」、の8章構成で107作家の作品を展観し、日本にとっての東アジアという場を近代から現代まで跡づける意義深い機会となった。

戦前の中国東北地方に建設された旧満州において、独自な写真表現を展開した淵上白陽と満州写真作家協会の活動と作品を500点を超える写真と資料によって紹介。
